ARTD1123 Visual Research and Study Skills for Fashion

Module Overview

This module introduces you to research, critical thinking, analysis and reflection within Art, Design and Culture in general and Fashion Design in particular. This module will equip you with skills necessary to get a greater understanding of the link between Fashion theory and practice and your output from this module will reflect the context and approaches of Fashion Design.

Knowledge and Understanding

Having successfully completed this module, you will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

  • contemporary issues in the practice and theory of art, design and culture relevant to fashion;
  • how to evaluate and use visual research and study skills in relevant contexts.
Subject Specific Intellectual and Research Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • inform your practice by analysing and critically reflecting on contemporary issues;
  • apply methods of enquiry and reflection which will enable you to critically evaluate and relate ideas to an intended context.
Transferable and Generic Skills

Having successfully completed this module you will be able to:

  • identify, select and draw upon a range of material and sources to inform your thinking and writing including digital sources;
  • generate ideas, study independently and produce work to set deadlines;
  • understand and utilise appropriate academic referencing;
  • appropriately structure an illustrated essay to clearly communicate ideas and concepts.


This module aims to introduce you to a broad range of study skills necessary to engage positively with fashion design and to communicate your ideas effectively. Through a range of contemporary Art, Design and Culture debates we will introduce you to methods and approaches that will inspire you to be critical of the work of others and to evaluate ideas informed by a critical context. You will be encouraged to reflect on the practice of making and the challenge of communicating ideas about visual material in written form. We will highlight the importance of academic integrity, i.e. not misrepresenting the work of others as your own, and raise your ethical awareness of the rights of others in the creative industries focusing on Fashion Design.

Learning and Teaching

Teaching and learning methods

Teaching methods include: ? Lectures ? Seminars ? Supporting material distributed via online learning environments such as Blackboard and Panopto. ? Online tutorials via Learning activities include: ? Peer group discussion ? Review and revision of material provided within the lectures. ? Guided independent research ? Written communication and the creation of a series of blogposts. ? Study skills hub Relationship between the teaching, learning and assessment methods and the planned learning outcomes This module will be taught through lectures that will provide the intellectual and skills framework necessary to enable you to apply critical, evaluative and reflective skills in the context of your ideas and work. Case studies drawn from current Art, Design and Culture debates will present methods and approaches necessary to formulate your ideas and communicate your thinking effectively. Through lectures and seminars you will explore and become familiar with Art, Design, Culture and Fashion terminology and test your thinking around key issues such as ethical behaviour and responsible fashion practice. This module focuses on developing the different facets of studying, how to conduct quality research and how to communicate effectively at undergraduate level, as well as the importance of self-initiated study. The assessment will help you to apply the skills you will develop throughout this module.
