The purpose is to understand why some children are born with a heart problem. There is a discussion of how a child develops normally in the first few weeks of pregnancy and in particular the formation of the heart. This enables us to understand what controls this process and how it may go wrong. How scientists can investigate this problem is presented and how this helps families is discussed.

Why is this important?

The relevance of investigating basic mechanisms of human development is highlighted. How families can be helped by scientific investigation. Insight into the scientific process of identifying a problem, investigating it, interpreting the results and providing answers to real questions raised by parents and children.
